Frequently Asked Questions

Are you currently accepting new clients?

I’m preparing to open my doors in the last quarter of 2024, but I’m not yet scheduling new clients. If you’d like to be added to a waitlist, please get in touch.

What is therapy?

Therapy (also called “psychotherapy”, “talk therapy”, or “counseling”) is the process of working through mental or emotional challenges within a supportive professional relationship. Doing this usually involves confronting unhelpful thought patterns, changing habits, and/or processing emotions.

How much does therapy at Prism cost?

If we agree to work together, our first session will be an intake interview for me to learn about your challenges and begin to develop a plan for therapy. This hour-long interview session costs $175.

My standard rate is $150 for one session, lasting 53-55 minutes.

These costs cover not only my face-to-face time with you, but also the out-of-session work I do to facilitate therapy, including record-keeping, scheduling, administration, and professional research.

More details are available in my Financial Policies document, which I send to prospective clients upon scheduling an intake interview.

Do you accept insurance?

I do not currently accept health insurance.

Do you offer discounts or fee reductions?

I intend to partner with the Open Path Psychotherapy Collective, an organization that serves clients in financial need seeking affordable mental health therapy. As such, I will reserve a limited number of low-fee appointment slots in my caseload for clients who cannot afford my full rate.

I also offer a discount on my standard rates to clients who pay with cash.

Do you offer therapy over video (telehealth)?

Doing therapy over video calls is a form of “telehealth”, which allows a counselor to meet with clients who cannot or prefer not to come into a traditional office setting. It can be much more comfortable and convenient than in-person therapy.

However, telehealth also comes with drawbacks, including a lack of emotional immediacy and increased opportunities for distraction.

I find in-person work better suited to my skills and thus more productive, so I only offer telehealth as a secondary, occasional service for established clients. The bulk of our therapy will be done in-person.

Do you do therapy over phone calls or text?

As a general rule, I do not offer therapy over the phone, either voice call or text.

How long will therapy last?

Therapy is a highly personal process. The length of our work together depends on many factors, including the nature of the issues we’re working on, your goals for therapy, and the ways you practice and apply therapy concepts outside of our appointments. Some clients see improvement within a few sessions; other clients will work for years to make steady, deep change.

When therapy begins, I will provide you with a good-faith estimate of how long our work together will last. This is by no means a guarantee, and we will revisit it throughout the counseling process.

What types of therapy do you do?

I provide therapy to individual adult (18+) clients.

I do not provide therapy to minor clients, and I do not offer group, family, or relationship counseling.

Can you prescribe psychiatric medication?

I do not have the professional qualifications to prescribe medicine, and don’t offer medication management. I suggest you work with your primary care physician or a psychiatrist for those services.
